If you are still in need...I fix/replace/repair power jack connectors for many different laptops including yours. Not only do I repair them, but I add a special compound that helps to prevent future problems with the DC power jack. I only charge $89.99 plus return shipping for the repair and the return shipping cost to get it back to you. Email me at blueddiamondd@harbornet.com if interested or visit my website: www.doctorlaptop-repair-jack.com
I not only fix the jack, and restore proper operations, but add a special compound to reinforce the repaired jack to help prevent future problems and I also run a complementary system check out of the units main functions after repair/servicing . Thanks alot The Laptop Doctor |

The center connection protrudes to the underside of the motherboard The trace on the motherboard goes to the left hand side of the chip directly above. The chip number from memory is 224.

If you do not reinforce the repaired socket
then you are asking for the problem to return especialy if one does not solder the parts together as the failure will re occur. The center cylinder is not very rigid and one of the electric components is just a clamp style connection. This type of electrical connection is not allowed for voltages less than 24/24 volts d.c. and there are plenty of tests on record and published in books that have validated this problem that has held up in federal courts such that now it is a slam dunk with respect to culpable negligence and a felony if a jury decides that it was willful by virture of denial. Even if the power cord does not pull on ithe socket failure will certainly occur because of oxidation. Now the cord pulling on the socket will certainly open up the electrical connection point. So.......the electrical circuit is soldered then one adds epoxy at the rear portion of the socket to give overall mechanical support. Limey |

All jacks on laptops break and wear out sooner or later. Just pick a new one up at www.delljacks.com or have them fix it. Just be more carefull with it the second time

Do you have a schematic or know where I can get one for the Inspiron 5150 motherboard? I want to jumper the power socket pins to another location on the
motherboard, as I still get no power even with a new socket. I expect that I destroyed an internal connection at the socket location as I widened the hole to
accept a new socket.

Have a 5160 dell I believe is the same board as the 5150. Purchased a 5160 on ebay that wouldn't
charge either. I replaced the power jack and that didn't help. Searched craiglist in my area and found a guy who works on laptop boards. He said he replaced a fuse that was close to the power jack on the board. charged me $30.00, I was a happy camper. Hope that helps Bad Boy |

Ideas for correcting Dell power jack design problem

My first Dell 5160 motherboard was ruined after the power jack broke free from the motherboard. Solder joints are unsuitable for the forces developed by the 1
inch long plug. The weight of the heavy gauge cord is significant when you consider the leverage the long plug creates. I agree that a more suitable mounting
arrangement would been for Dell to have used a connector with flanges that could have been attached to the chassis or circuit board with screws.
See my post below for a solution to this problem.. Mitch

One other Idea to address the Dell Power Connector Problem
|
I've so far been unsuccessful locating a right -angle 7.4 mm OD power connector to replace Dell's. It just occurred to me though, a quick fix might be
to attach a 7/16 inside dia shaft collar over the end of the connector boot, just before where the boot meets the metal outer contact. The collar which is
3/8" thick will cut the moment arm of the force because it shifts the point of rotation from where the connector meets the panel to the outside of the
collar, at the tip of the hole. The OD of the boot is .45" so a collar with a 7/16 bore fits. The clamp-on type is probably better than the type with a
set screw.
This is a collar which would work well: http://www1.mscdirect.com...M?PACACHE=000000079657765 or http://www.smallparts.com...amp;pf_rd_m=AIUBT5HP6PMAF If after installation, the connector is pulled out of the laptop slightly, the benefit of the collar will be lost. mitch
