So here's the scoop. Customer brings a 5150 that has the infamous shutdown problem. Customer states that it has been out of warranty for about a year, so I buy it from him dirt cheap.
So, just for giggles, I goto Dell's Online chat support and see what I can muster up. I tell them about the "Random Hanging," and "Random shutdown" problem, and how I have researched this on the Internet and found out the Dell is very aware of this problem and offers a solution. {Not sure of Dell's solution, but just seeing what the tech will say}
The tech asks me for the links I've found, so I provided this forum, www.hardwareanalysis.com/...43678/?o=0 , and a link to the lawsuit regarding the 5150's www.lieffcabraser.com/dell-inspiron.htm.
Five minutes later after talking to his supervisor, the guy tells me that my laptop is still under warranty until 9/30/07!
So either the guy I bought it from forgot he has a warranty on it. {which I doubt because he went round and round with dell trying to get them to fix it}, or they're still trying to clean up the 5150 laptop mess they've created and extended my warranty until the end of the month.
Anyway, my point is, if you don't want to mess with the fixes provided here, contact Dell throught their online chat and see what they'll do for you. It was relatively painless. They sent a box to ship the laptop in the next day, and my laptop was gone the next day. Dell states that it'll take 8 to 10 days to get back. No big deal there.
I'll attach the transcripts of my session once I receive my laptop back. Good luck!
